Sleepy vs. Awake Newborn Photos: How to Capture Beautiful Images No Matter Your Baby’s Mood

If you’ve been dreaming of those perfectly curled, deeply asleep newborn photos, I completely understand. They’re gorgeous. But here’s something I want you to know before your session: in all the newborn sessions I’ve done, I can count on one hand the number of times a baby slept through the entire thing. And honestly? That’s okay. Whether your baby is snoozing peacefully or wide-eyed and curious, there is a way to create beautiful, meaningful images – and I want to walk you through exactly how that works.

What Really Happens During a Newborn Session

Most parents come in hoping for one type of session – either they have their heart set on those dreamy, sleepy portraits, or they’re excited to catch some awake, alert moments with their new baby looking right into the camera.

What I’ve learned after working with many families is that babies have their own ideas about all of this, and that’s completely fine.

I’ve had older babies who absolutely refused to be swaddled and only fell asleep once I unswaddled them and let them settle. I’ve had babies who needed the space to be completely quiet and still before they’d drift off. And I’ve had babies who stayed awake from start to finish, giving us the most gorgeous wide-eyed expressions.

The session adapts to your baby – not the other way around.

The Real Difference Between Awake and Asleep Photos

I want to be honest with you here, because I think it’s more helpful than just saying both are equally beautiful and leaving it at that.

They are both beautiful – but they do have a different feel, and they require different approaches from me.

Sleepy newborn images

  • Create a soft, peaceful, timeless look
  • Allow for more wrapped or posed portraits on the bean bag or in a basket (in the studio) or on your bed or in the crib (in your home)
  • Give a sense of stillness and serenity that many parents love

Awake newborn images

  • Have a completely different energy – more lively, more personality-forward
  • Capturing genuine eye contact is tricky, and I’ll be honest: I overshoot during awake sessions specifically so we have the best chance of landing those direct, connected moments
  • I use techniques from my education and background, along with my experience as a mom, to encourage that eye contact in a calm, gentle way

One important thing I pay close attention to with awake babies: babies have natural protective reflexes, and I’m careful not to trigger those reflexes, which can increase stiffness and extension patterns. My goal is always to keep your baby feeling supported and at ease.

If your baby is awake, I’ll almost always include at least one parent in the images – even if it’s just your hands gently holding them. It adds warmth, tells a fuller story, and helps keep a squirmy baby feeling safe and settled.

How I Adapt When a Baby Has Other Plans

Here’s what actually changes depending on your baby’s mood during the session:

Clothing and blankets

I’ll adjust what the baby is wearing and how they’re wrapped based on whether they’re sleepy or alert. Certain fabrics and levels of snugness can make a real difference in how settled a baby feels.

Poses and angles

With a more alert or active baby, I lean into profile views and angles that work beautifully even if your baby isn’t completely relaxed. These can be some of the most stunning images in a gallery.

Who’s holding the baby

If needed, I’ll switch who is holding the baby mid-session. Sometimes a different set of arms is exactly what a baby needs to calm down or stay comfortable.

Bean bag, basket, bed, or crib

In my studio, I use a bean bag or basket. In your home, I often use your bed or the baby’s crib – whatever surface gives your baby the best sense of security in that moment.

The goal at the end of every session is to deliver a gallery that includes both awake and asleep images, because that is really life. Photographs document the stage your family is actually in, not a curated version of it.

What I Wish More Parents Knew Before Booking

This is the part I feel really strongly about, so I want to say it clearly.

Experience matters. A lot. The reason a newborn session can produce a gallery of beautiful images – whether your baby sleeps or not – comes down to the experience your photographer has working with newborns. That’s not meant to be discouraging. It’s meant to help you make a more informed choice.

If you know you want to capture your new baby, reach out during your second trimester. Here’s why that timing matters:

  • It gives us time to plan outfits and think through whether you’d prefer a studio session or an in-home session
  • It gives us flexibility if your baby arrives early or a little late
  • It allows you to secure your spot on my calendar with a retainer, and once that’s in place, you become my scheduling priority

Waiting until the last minute often means scrambling, and that added stress is the last thing a new parent needs.

One more thing if you’re bringing a toddler along: bring a toy, or pull up a song on your phone that makes them want to dance. Be silly with them. Tickle them. Kids want nothing more than love and connection with their parent, and when that genuine connection is your focus, it shows up beautifully in the images.

Why This All Matters

Childhood is fast. I mean genuinely, startlingly fast.

The newborn stage lasts such a short time, and whether your baby spends your session curled up and peaceful or looking around at the big wide world with those brand-new eyes – both are worth preserving. Both are real. Both are yours.

You don’t need a perfect session where everything goes exactly as planned. You need a photographer who can flow with whatever your baby brings and still come back with images that make your heart skip.

That’s exactly what I show up to do for every single family I work with.
